For most homeowners, carpet cleaning is one of the most important factors. All homes have dust, oil, and grease. This makes dirty traffic areas even more of a problem. For best soil removal, hot water extraction is the preferred method as it rinses with hot water to remove dirt and soils. Use warm water when rinsing, but make sure the traffic lane cleaner dwells for fifteen minutes first. If you decide to clean the carpet yourself, make sure you use the hottest water you can get.

In any case, use a machine with strong enough vacuum power to extract the water and dirt. Since most traffic leaners are alkaline, a mild acidic rinse is sometimes necessary to leave your carpet in a PH balanced state. Now you can coat your carpet with a protector, and place it in front of a fan, which will blow-dry your carpet. Cold air is best, so set your air conditioner to 70 degrees. And if you feel that the humidity is rising in the room you can open a door or a window for the air to flow out of the room.

Be sure to get professional cleaning at least every year for better carpet health. It’s imortant to have traffic lanes cleaned well before they look like they’re dirty. You could have some permanent damage if you wait until your carpets look dirty.

At bare minimum, reapply fabric protector in your high traffic lanes every other year. At the time you bought your carpet, it was totally protected with 3M Scotchgard or something similar. More traffic means less protection in your high traffic lanes.
